222 Meaning of matter protected by the Commonwealth
In this Act:
matter protected by the Commonwealth means a matter protected by a provision of the EPBC Act, chapter 2 (Protecting the environment), part 3 (Requirements for environmental approvals).
In this section:
matter protected by a provision of the EPBC Act, chapter 2, part 3—see the EPBC Act, section 34 (What is matter protected by a provision of Part 3?).
The EPBC Act, ch 2, pt 3 deals with taking action that would have a significant impact on a matter of national environmental significance. Matters of national environmental significance include the following:
world heritage properties
national heritage places
wetlands of international importance (Ramsar wetlands)
threatened species and threatened ecological communities
migratory species protected under international agreements
nuclear actions
water resources in relation to coal seam gas development and large coal mining development.
