154 Compulsory voting
(1)
An elector who is at least 18 years of age on the polling day must vote at the election.
Maximum penalty: 1 penalty unit.
(2)
An offence against subsection (1) is an offence of strict liability.
(3)
It is a defence to a prosecution for an offence against subsection (1) if the defendant establishes a valid and sufficient reason for not voting.
(4)
Without limiting subsection (3), an elector is taken to have a valid and sufficient reason for not voting if the elector is precluded from voting because of the elector's religious beliefs.
