16 Duty to help investigation
This section applies if—
a coroner is investigating a death; and
the coroner reasonably believes a person may be able to give the coroner information, a document or anything else that is relevant to the investigation.
The coroner may require the person to give the coroner information, a document or anything else that is relevant to the investigation.
The requirement may be made orally or in writing.
When making the requirement, the coroner must warn the person it is an offence to fail to comply with the requirement unless the person has a reasonable excuse.
The person must comply with the requirement, unless the person has a reasonable excuse.Maximum penalty—30 penalty units.
It is, for example, a reasonable excuse for a person to fail to comply with the requirement if complying with the requirement would tend to incriminate the person.
