Electoral Act 1992

The Governor in Council may terminate the appointment of a senior electoral officer for misbehaviour or physical or mental incapacity.

The Governor in Council must terminate a senior electoral officer’s appointment if the senior electoral officer—

accepts nomination for election to an Australian parliament; or

becomes a member of a political party; or

becomes bankrupt, applies to take the benefit of any law for the relief of bankrupt or insolvent debtors, compounds with creditors or makes an assignment of remuneration for their benefit; or

is absent, without leave of absence and without reasonable excuse, for—

14 consecutive days; or

28 days in any year; or

contravenes section 12 without reasonable excuse; or

engages in paid employment outside the duties of the office without the Minister’s approval.
