Financial Intermediaries Act 1996

register, supervise and regulate societies; and

supervise and enforce compliance by societies with this Act and with standards; and

ensure that an effective and efficient system of prudential supervision is applied to societies; and

protect the interests of members of societies; and

administer the Cooperatives Supervision Fund; and

facilitate or direct the transfer of engagements of, or the merger of, societies; and

otherwise undertake the administration and enforcement of this Act; and

give information and statistics to the Treasurer about societies; and

advise, and make recommendations to, the Treasurer; and

carry out the functions conferred on the registrar by another provision of this Act, other than part 2.
