79 Giving way to police, emergency, enforcement and escort vehicles
A driver must give way to a police vehicle, emergency vehicle, or enforcement vehicle or escort vehicle, that is displaying a flashing blue, red or magenta light (whether or not it is also displaying other lights) or sounding an alarm. Fine not exceeding 15 penalty units.Emergency vehicle,enforcement vehicle,escort vehicle and police vehicle are defined in the dictionary. For this rule, give way means – if the driver is stopped – remain stationary until it is safe to proceed; or in any other case – slow down and, if necessary, stop to avoid a collision;– see the definition in the dictionary.
This rule applies to the driver despite any other rule of the Road Rules that would otherwise require the driver of a police vehicle, emergency vehicle, enforcement vehicle or escort vehicle to give way to the driver.
