A sentencing judge does not err by describing a sentence as a 'compromise' between competing sentencing aims where the case involves tension between rehabilitation and denunciation/deterrence. A sentence of three months' imprisonment followed by a substantial community-based order for repeated reckless assaults on a newborn infant, where the offender has attention deficit disorder, reduced intellectual capacity, genuine remorse and has undertaken voluntary rehabilitation, is not manifestly excessive.
