The parity principle does not require a sentencing judge to reduce an otherwise appropriate sentence to match a co-offender's sentence that was itself outside the permissible range of sentencing discretion. Where the co-offender's sentence is excessively lenient, the second judge is not required to impose a 'second wrong sentence', and the disparity may not be entirely removed or, on occasions, removed at all. For armed robbery in company in Western Australia, the standard range is 6 to 9 years imprisonment for a single offence.
