A sentence of 4 years' imprisonment for aggravated burglary involving a home invasion where the offender forced entry, drove out elderly occupants, and caused substantial damage is within range, even where the offender has alcohol addiction and a traumatic background. Sentences imposed on successful Crown appeals are of limited utility in demonstrating manifest excess because they establish only the minimum level of punishment, adjusted for double jeopardy. The mitigatory value of a guilty plea is much reduced where the offender was apprehended in circumstances making conviction inevitable.
