Where culpable driving causes multiple deaths from the same course of driving, the sentencing judge's discretion to cumulate sentences is not inhibited by the fact that the deaths resulted from the same acts or omissions; cumulation is appropriate to recognise the separate victims, provided the total effective sentence does not offend the principle of totality. The absence of explanatory factors such as alcohol or drugs does not mitigate the seriousness of culpable driving; rather, it may aggravate it by confirming wilful disregard for road laws and public safety.
