A trial judge is bound to give an Edwards direction regarding lies, post-offence conduct and consciousness of guilt where the Crown relies on such matters, even where defence counsel does not seek such a direction. Where prisoner witnesses are called, the trial judge must identify for the jury the specific pieces of evidence capable in law of constituting corroboration of those witnesses' evidence, rather than leaving the jury at large on that question.
