A fast-track plea of guilty does not automatically attract a discount of approximately 30 per cent. The discount must be assessed by separately considering the extent to which the plea indicates remorse, acceptance of moral responsibility, and willingness to facilitate the course of justice. Where a plea is of utilitarian value only (no demonstrated remorse or acceptance of moral responsibility), a discount of 20 per cent may be appropriate. Acceptance of responsibility in this context means acceptance of moral responsibility, not merely legal responsibility.
