The entitlement to a sentencing discount for a plea of guilty arises whether or not the offender has prior convictions and irrespective of the motive for the plea. It would be legally erroneous to reduce or remove the value of a plea of guilty as an indicator of remorse solely because the offender has prior convictions. Where a sentencing judge adopts substantial cumulation orders without moderating individual sentences and without explanation, the approach betrays sentencing error.
