Good behaviour bonds are manifestly inadequate for aggravated break and enter (home invasion) offences involving use of a weapon and corporal violence, even where the offenders have exceptional subjective circumstances and were motivated by a genuine desire to protect a family member rather than personal gain. A sentencing judge must provide adequate reasons for departing from the standard non-parole period, including by assessing the objective gravity of the offence relative to the middle of the range, even where the offender has pleaded guilty and the standard non-parole period applies only as a benchmark.
