Conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm for reward shares characteristics with contract killings (premeditation, cold-bloodedness, calculated risk versus gain) warranting sentences high on the relevant scale. Where the inadequacy of a sentence is so grave, the sense of grievance from disparity with co-offenders whose sentences were not appealed is not legitimate and does not preclude the Court from intervening. Possession of a loaded prohibited pistol at the scene of a violent crime is well above the mid-range of objective seriousness for the offence under s 7 of the Firearms Act.
