The parity principle has limited utility when comparing sentences imposed on adult offenders with those imposed on co-offenders in the Children's Court, given the fundamentally different sentencing objectives and considerations. The complexity of a multi-offence sentencing exercise significantly distorts any single-offence parity comparison. The extent of adjustment to the statutory ratio for special circumstances remains a matter within the sentencing judge's discretion, and this Court will only intervene if the non-parole period is manifestly inadequate or excessive.
