Sentencing statistics are of limited utility and do not define the permissible range of sentences; the range disclosed by statistics for demanding money with menaces (s 99 Crimes Act 1900) is considered inadequate relative to the 14-year maximum. Where multiple offences are separated in time, wholly concurrent sentences are unorthodox but the overall sentence will be assessed for manifest excess.
