For offences under s 112(3) of the Crimes Act 1900 falling well above the mid-range of objective seriousness, the maximum penalty of 25 years is the principal sentencing guidepost rather than the standard non-parole period of 7 years. The extreme objective seriousness of a home invasion involving a loaded shotgun discharged three times in close proximity to residents justified a sentence of 9 years (non-parole 6 years) for an 18-year-old first offender who pleaded guilty. The fact that the underlying serious indictable offence (assault occasioning actual bodily harm) was at the lowest threshold of qualifying offences does not prevent the overall offence from being assessed as well above mid-range.
