Differences in criminal history (prior convictions for common assault versus no prior convictions) and degree of culpability (personal motive and role as initiator of the assault) can justify a significant disparity between co-offenders' sentences — including actual imprisonment for one and a wholly suspended sentence for others — without giving rise to a justifiable sense of grievance under the parity principle. Remarks made by a sentencing judge at a subsequent co-offender's sentencing hearing do not qualify the reasons comprehensively expressed at the applicant's own sentencing.
