Stranger rape offences involving abduction at knifepoint, threats to kill, prolonged torment, and multiple acts of rape are at the very serious end of the scale and require sentences well above the median. Sentencing statistics are only a starting point and must be supplemented by comparable decisions. The right of community members to go about ordinary activities without fear of attack is a significant sentencing consideration requiring stern judicial response.
