Where the prosecution invites the jury to treat an accused's post-offence conduct as an implied admission of guilt, an Edwards direction must be given; a Zoneff direction is insufficient. The collateral evidence rule precludes the defence from leading evidence to contradict a complainant on matters going only to credit, even where the complainant's credibility is the central issue in the trial. Where evidence is incapable as a matter of law of supporting the charged offence, no double jeopardy arises from ordering a retrial on an alternative charge based on the same conduct.
