Where there are issues as to the nature of an offender's mental illness and its causal effect on offending, the sentencing judge must consider the applicability and effect of the Verdins principles and deal with those questions transparently in sentencing remarks. A failure to make clear findings on these matters constitutes sentencing error that reopens the sentencing discretion.
