Where a complainant's uncorroborated evidence is the sole basis for conviction on multiple counts and the jury acquits on some counts, the guilty verdicts will be set aside as inconsistent if there is nothing in the evidence or surrounding circumstances rendering the complainant's evidence more reliable on the counts of conviction than on the counts of acquittal. Self-serving exculpatory statements by an accused in police interviews remain inadmissible in Queensland, and the English line of authority permitting such evidence as showing the 'reaction of the accused' is not accepted.
