The number and nature of a young offender's prior convictions, alone or in combination with the nature of the current offending, may limit the degree of leniency accorded on the basis of youth, such that adult imprisonment may be the only appropriate sentence even where the youth justice system is assessed as still having something to offer. Rehabilitation remains almost always a consideration of great importance for young offenders.
