The parity principle applies not only to complaints of gross disparity between co-offenders' sentences but also to complaints of unjustified parity, where co-offenders receive the same sentence despite different circumstances. In such cases, the threshold for appellate intervention requires a marked or manifest difference between the co-offenders' circumstances sufficient to give rise to an appearance of injustice. Modest differences in criminal record and rehabilitation prospects, without more, will not meet this threshold.
