An 18-month sentence for recklessly causing serious injury by glassing is manifestly inadequate where the offender has a recent prior conviction for strikingly similar alcohol-fuelled violence and was on a suspended sentence at the time. In such circumstances, the purposes of sentencing can only be achieved by a reasonably lengthy term of imprisonment, and a community correction order is insufficient. The sentence was increased to 3 years and 6 months on the glassing charge.
