Where a young offender commits serious violent offending such as a 'glassing' attack while on probation and with a prior history of violent offending, adult imprisonment rather than youth justice centre detention is appropriate notwithstanding the offender's youth and positive engagement with rehabilitation services. A self-inflicted injury sustained during the commission of a violent offence has limited mitigatory effect where the offender must have foreseen the risk of injury to himself.
