Where a complainant's evidence at a special hearing is materially inconsistent with the VARE evidence adopted as evidence-in-chief, and the inconsistencies amount to recantation or leave a real doubt as to guilt, the resulting convictions will be unsafe and unsatisfactory. Where multiple charges arise from a single sequence of events and depend entirely on the credibility of one witness, the quashing of convictions on some charges due to the unreliability of that witness's evidence may require the quashing of all related convictions, even where the evidence on the remaining charge was not itself directly contradicted.
