Good character evidence consisting solely of absence of prior convictions may be of limited value where the accused has been in the jurisdiction for only a short period, particularly where the Crown case is strong and independently supported by forensic evidence. The failure to adduce such limited character evidence will not constitute a substantial miscarriage of justice where the evidence would have provided only a small measure of support to the accused's case.
