A sentence of 15 years imprisonment (non-parole period of 9 years) for trafficking in approximately 7.8 kg of methamphetamine at 81% purity (more than eight times the commercial quantity) under s 302.2(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth) is within the permissible range, even where the offender has no prior convictions, where the offender was recruited from overseas as an intermediary in an international syndicate and travelled to Australia solely to commit the offence. Sentencing statistics divorced from the particulars of the underlying cases do not demonstrate manifest excess.
