A sentence of seven years' imprisonment with parole eligibility after three years for grievous bodily harm with intent involving a prolonged machete attack causing serious tendon and muscle injuries, committed in the context of escalating violence across multiple offences on the same night, falls within the sentencing range of five to eight years for this type of offence and is not manifestly excessive. A sentencing judge may appropriately set a parole eligibility date above what would otherwise apply for the most serious count alone, in order to reflect the overall criminality of concurrent offending.
