ABS life expectancy statistics do not meaningfully assist in sentencing because they are general in nature and not a substitute for evidence about the health and life expectancy of the particular offender. While the possibility that an elderly offender may die in prison is a weighty consideration, it may be appropriate to impose a sentence that results in the offender spending all remaining years in prison, depending on the gravity of the offending and other sentencing factors.
