The assessment of objective seriousness of child sexual offences is an evaluative process reviewable only on House v The King principles, and a mid-range assessment is open where the offender cultivated relationships with families to gain access to children, the victims were of very tender age, and there were serious breaches of trust. Sentencing statistics comparing an overall sentence with statistics for individual offences are of no utility.
