A total effective sentence of 10 years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of 6 years and 6 months for offending involving aggravated burglary, three charges of rape (five separate acts of penetration), threat to kill, sexual assault and theft committed in a single episode was within the available range. Individual sentences of 8 years for each rape charge were not manifestly excessive given the objective gravity of the offending. The various forms of rape (digital, oral, penile) are not to be distinguished in terms of seriousness. Median sentencing statistics are of little assistance in assessing the appropriateness of a sentence in a particular case.
