An offender's subjective case, however powerful — including extreme deprivation, youth, Indigenous background, and Bugmy factors — must not result in a sentence that fails to reflect the gravity of the offending. The attribution of weight to competing sentencing considerations remains a matter for the sentencing judge, and the CCA will not intervene merely because it might have exercised the discretion differently. A sentencing judge's failure to inquire into the reasons for a young offender's criminal history is not an error where no such submission was made at first instance.
