A licence comes into force—

for a class 1 or class 2 licence—when the photograph of the licence holder is taken by Service NSW for the licence, or

for a master licence—on the date specified on the licence.

The renewal of a licence comes into force—

if the application for renewal is lodged under section 17 before its expiry and the Commissioner grants the application—on the expiry of the licence, or

if the application for renewal is lodged after its expiry—on the day the Commissioner grants the application for renewal of the licence.

A licence remains in force for a period of 5 years (or such shorter period as may be prescribed by the regulations) from the day on which it comes into force, unless sooner surrendered or revoked or it otherwise ceases to be in force.
