Where—
a person makes a false representation—
to a police officer; or
to a person who is not a police officer knowing that it is likely that the representation will be communicated by that person to a police officer, knowing the representation to be false; and
the representation is such as would reasonably call for investigation by the police, the person by whom the representation was made is guilty of an offence.
Maximum penalty: $10 000 or imprisonment for 2 years.
Upon convicting a person of an offence against this section, the court may order the convicted person to pay to the complainant a reasonable sum for the expenses of or incidental to any investigation made by a police officer as a result of the false representation.
An amount received by the complainant under this section must be paid to the Treasurer in aid of the Consolidated Account.
