For offences of intentionally causing serious injury involving premeditated home invasion with a weapon and domestic violence, sentences must reflect the seriousness of the offending through adequate weight to general deterrence and denunciation, even where the offender has demonstrated commendable rehabilitation. Emotional distress arising from relationship breakdown or threats to a parental relationship can never justify or mitigate violent offending. A sentence of 12 months for such offending was manifestly inadequate and was increased to 3 years.
