The parity principle does not require a court to impose a sentence it regards as manifestly inadequate merely because a co-offender received a lenient sentence. A successful sentence appeal by one co-offender reopens the sentencing discretion for other co-offenders but does not necessarily require a reduction in their sentences. The difference in maximum penalties between offences does not, without more, establish that an offender who committed the offence with the higher maximum is more culpable than a co-offender who committed the offence with the lower maximum.
