A head sentence of 14 years for persistent sexual exploitation of a child involving one act of digital sexual intercourse and numerous indecent assaults over several years was held to be outside the appropriate range, notwithstanding serious aggravating factors including prior similar offending, breach of trust, and lack of remorse. The appropriate sentence was 10 years with a 7-year non-parole period. A possible diagnosis of schizophrenia does not, without more, warrant departure from normal general deterrence principles under s 10(4) of the Criminal Law (Sentencing) Act 1988 (SA).
