In this section – relevant standards means whichever of the following is appropriate in the circumstances:standards for registration of a new individual non-government school prescribed by the regulations; standards for renewal of registration of a registered individual school prescribed by the regulations.

The Registration Board may suspend the registration of a registered individual school for a period not exceeding 12 months – if satisfied that – the school no longer meets the relevant standards; or the school or its governing body is not complying with any condition to which the registration is subject; or the school's governing body has failed to comply with a direction given to it under section 194; or it is in the best interests of the students at that school to do so; or if the school's governing body has notified the Registration Board, in writing, that the school will have no enrolments for a specified period of time; or for any reason prescribed by the regulations.

In determining whether or not to suspend the registration of a registered individual school, the Registration Board – is to consider any reports provided by the Registrar under Division 6 in relation to the school; and may take into account any information it considers relevant; and is to allow the governing body of the school a reasonable opportunity to make written submissions in relation to the matter; and must consider any such submissions.

On suspending the registration of a registered individual school, the Registration Board, in writing, is to notify – the governing body of the school of – the suspension; and the date on which the suspension takes effect; and the reasons for the suspension; and the Minister of the suspension and the date on which it takes effect; and the Secretary of the department of the Commonwealth government having responsibilities in relation to education and training of the suspension and the date on which it takes effect.

The suspension of the registration of a registered individual school takes effect on the day specified in the notice provided to its governing body under subsection (4).
