14 Rear overhang

A person must not use, or cause or permit the use of, a light semi-trailer or dog trailer if the rear overhang exceeds – 60% of the distance between the point of articulation at the front and the rear overhang line; or 3.7 metres. In the case of – a first offence, a fine not exceeding 20 penalty units; or a subsequent offence, a fine not exceeding 40 penalty units.

A light semi-trailer with 2 or more points of articulation at the front must comply with subregulation (1) when measured at the same point used for measurement for compliance with regulation 12(3).

A person must not use, or cause or permit the use of, a pig trailer if the rear overhang exceeds – the length of the load-carrying area, or body, ahead of the rear overhang line; or 3.7 metres. In the case of – a first offence, a fine not exceeding 20 penalty units; or a subsequent offence, a fine not exceeding 40 penalty units.

A person must not use, or cause or permit the use of, a light vehicle not specified in subregulation (1) or (3) if the rear overhang exceeds – 60% of the distance between the centre of the front axle and the rear overhang line; or 3.7 metres. In the case of – a first offence, a fine not exceeding 20 penalty units; or a subsequent offence, a fine not exceeding 40 penalty units.

For the purposes of this regulation, the rear overhang is measured at right angles between the rear overhang line of a vehicle and the rear of the vehicle or any load that it is carrying.
