A sentence of 20 years with a 16-year non-parole period for a premeditated, callous murder of an ex-wife by shooting, where the offender pleaded guilty but showed no remorse, was well within the available sentencing range. The absence of remorse and continuing hostility towards family members justified declining to significantly moderate specific deterrence, notwithstanding the offender's low risk of reoffending. Advanced age (62) does not justify an unacceptably inappropriate sentence even where the sentence has the genuine potential to mean the offender will die in custody. Where the Verdins principles are not directly engaged and there is no evidentiary basis for reduced moral culpability on mental health grounds, the sentencing judge's obligation is limited to taking into account the additional burden of imprisonment.
