Public Interest Disclosure Act 2012

A person who takes detrimental action against someone else because of a public interest disclosure is liable in damages to anyone who suffers detriment as a result.

Detrimental action is a tort and damages may be recovered in a proceeding in a court of competent jurisdiction.

Any remedy that may be given by a court for a tort, including exemplary damages, may be given by a court in a proceeding under this section.

The right of a person to bring a proceeding for damages under this section does not affect any other right or remedy available to the person arising from detrimental action.
