Junior is Barrister AI on your own computer. Everything the website does — cited answers, full memos, your Notebook — in a small window that sits above whatever you are working in, with a panel that answers inside Word, a citation check for your drafts and a place to read your briefs. Your files stay on your machine, encrypted by the app itself. If the computer is stolen, they stay locked.

How you use it
Here is what Junior looks like on your desk.
One small window that grows when you need it. Here are the four things it does, drawn as they appear on screen.- 01Ask
Ask a question of Australian law, get a cited answer.
Click the field, or press ⌥⌘J, and the capsule opens into the Research window. Type the question as you would put it to a junior. About a minute later the answer comes back with the authorities it rests on — real cases, each marked Verified, with the principle it stands for.

Or ask from a highlight, without retyping a word.
Select a passage in Pages, Mail, Preview, Safari or a PDF, right-click, and choose Services › Ask Junior. Junior comes forward with the passage already in the composer. Nothing is submitted and nothing is charged until you press send.

Inside Word, with the answer beside your draft.
Junior adds a small group to Word’s Home tab: Ask Junior, Check citations, Junior panel. Open the panel once and it stays with the document: select a passage, press Ask Junior, and the cited answer opens there — the authorities, their pinpoints, and what each one stands for — instead of pulling Junior’s own window forward. Check citations reads the authorities in your document and tells you which ones it can find and which numbers to look at again — before a judge does.

Your brief, read on your own machine.
Drop the documents — or the whole matter folder — onto the rail. Junior reads and indexes them on your computer, encrypted, and keeps the index in your own Documents folder. Then ask the brief questions, search it, or open the case map.

Folders, saved answers, notes and highlights match the website, and cases open in the website’s own reader, formatting intact.

Junior signs in to your existing Barrister AI Counsel account and bills research at the ordinary rates. It is not a separate subscription.
On a Mac
Open the disk image
Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Junior into Applications.
Launch it
Junior is notarised by Apple, so macOS opens it without the unidentified-developer warning.
Sign in
Use the Google account on your Barrister AI Counsel subscription. If you were already signed in elsewhere, you may need to sign out and back in once.
Summon it
Press ⌥⌘J from anywhere to bring Junior forward.
On Windows
Run the installer
Open the downloaded .exe. It installs for you alone and asks where Junior should live — no administrator password needed.
Get past SmartScreen
Windows will say it protected your PC, because this build is not yet signed. Choose More info, then Run anyway — or check the SHA-256 below first, which proves the file is ours without trusting a dialog.
Sign in
Use the Google account on your Barrister AI Counsel subscription. If you were already signed in elsewhere, you may need to sign out and back in once.
Summon it
Press Ctrl+Alt+J from anywhere to bring Junior forward.
To check the download is exactly what we published, run shasum -a 256 Junior-1.6.0-arm64.dmg — it should print b3ed7cafa56c90561ebbea4231e3f7c960048a38fd26a24ce57c42651e255034.

The fine print
What leaves your computer, and what doesn’t.
Your files and your history stay on your own machine. Sync is the one thing that changes that, and it is off until you turn it on: with it on, your briefs — documents included — and your research are copied to your account, so your other Macs, the website and the iPad can show them. Junior sets out what travels, and where it is held, before it copies anything. A research question still has to reach our servers and our AI providers to be answered. How long anything is held, whether it is used for training, and how your identity is kept separate from your activity are set out on the security page, and in plain English for barristers on the privilege page.
